Glaucoma is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease of the visual system and is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. In addition to vision changes, increasing recent evidence suggests widespread structural and functional brain alterations in glaucoma. The impact of these alterations on sensorimotor function related to postural control is unclear. The goal of this project was twofold: (1) better understand how glaucoma may impair the brain structurally and functionally using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, and (2) whether these brain changes in glaucoma are associated with impairments related to sensory integration processes related balance and mobility.
